![]() (& I always use felt anti-corrosion donuts at each post) I guess it's always possible we got a bad alternator, but it just doesn't seem likely, and they dont' bench test alternators around here, have to find a place that will do that to test the alternator. We are planning on getting the old alternator back from the store to have it tested. Truck alternator putting out high 13 volts. If my husband attaches jumper cables to his truck, his truck charges the battery while running the car with a negligible dip in the voltage from his truck to the car. Volts at battery go from 12.5v and then steadily go down as the car is running. But, at this point, it's not charging at all and then the light comes back on. The battery light is not on all the time but comes on after the car has been running for a little bit. And it went from charging in the beginning to intermittently charging, to now not charging at all. total time from alternator replacement till now is less than 1 hour of runtime. Turned it off, turned back on, then eventually the battery stopped charging, battery light is on and will only start if jumped. Then I revved it a few times, intermittently at high RPMs battery light would blink on and then off. Turned it off, turned it back on, battery light went off. ![]() Let it sit idle for a little bit, and then the battery light came on. Got it home, turned the car off, checked all the connectors, turned it back on, battery light was off and it was charging (around 14 v at the battery). Took it on a test drive and the battery light came on near the end of the test drive. When the alternator was first put in, it started up and everything seemed to be working fine. The issue is that it just keeps dying after the battery is depleted. Then once it's charged again, it starts up no problem. The car will start with the battery fully charged, it will only shut off if it's left long enough for the battery to deplete. The alternator charges the battery and, you should charge the battery first and clean the clamp connections and battery posts. ![]() PS: Just to be clear: The engine will not turn over (crank) at all OR the engine turns over (cranks) normally but it will not start? The alternator should have nothing to do with the engine not turning over (cranking) or not starting if it is turning over (but not starting). So, either a poor ground or a poor connection of one of the clamps to the battery posts or a weak battery.ĭid you charge up the battery with a battery charger? I suppose you could also measure the voltage on the battery while you crank the engine to see how low the voltage goes. The problem with the lights going on in the dash can easily be related to a very poor clamp connection to one of the battery posts. Putting jumpers on just puts current to the clamps even if they have a terrible connection to the battery posts. If the battery is showing 12.6v or so and it will not 'crank' ,but it will 'crank' when you husband jumpers it, than it most likely is a problem with the connection of the cable clamps to the battery posts. Does anyone have any ideas what it might be? Not really wanting to change out the computer if we don't have to. We are at a loss as to what it could be other than the computer. Ran a test on the OBD II reader and no faults are showing. I checked wires, all are working, checked the serpentine belt, no issues there either. However, replacing the alternator has not fixed the issue. Car died at home and didn't start without again hooking up to husband's truck.Ĭhecked the battery - voltage was good, so we replaced the alternator. Husband was able to come with his truck to charge up the battery enough so I could get home. Turned around to head home, but wasn't able to make it when the car died. A month later while driving down the highway, there was a kind of surge, then all the lights on the dash came on, the DVD player would go on and off. Took it to Autozone, battery and alternator came back fine. Took it to Autozone and had the battery and alternator checked, both came back working, no issues.Īt some point about a month ago, the battery light came on and stayed on. Everything worked well until about a month ago when the battery light came on intermittently. We just got a used '07 Honda Odyssey EX-L with 150,000 miles on it.
